The latest legal battle is a stark contrast to the couple’s early relationship, which was once seen as one of the more inspiring partnerships in Indian sport.
Mary and Onler first met in New Delhi in 2000 after Mary reportedly lost her luggage while travelling for a boxing competition. Onler, who was studying law at Delhi University and was involved with the North-East student community, helped her.
Their friendship eventually turned into a relationship, and the couple married in 2005.
They went on to have a family, welcoming twin sons in 2007 and another son in 2014. They later adopted a daughter in 2018.
During Mary’s rise as an international boxing star, Onler was often described as a major support system in her career. He took on responsibilities at home and looked after the children while she travelled for competitions.
Mary had also credited him for standing by her during her boxing journey.
But their relationship eventually fell apart. The couple divorced in 2023 under Kom customary law, after years of differences.
